What We Do
Connection. Purpose. Opportunity.
Affinity House brings people together in a supportive Clubhouse community where recovery grows through connection, purpose, and opportunity. Members take part in meaningful work, social activities, employment support, and wellness programs that help them build confidence, develop skills, and stay connected to their community.
Each day is centered on shared purpose. More than 50 members and staff work side by side to operate the Clubhouse and contribute to the activities that keep the community welcoming and active. Through this teamwork, members build friendships, strengthen practical skills, and gain confidence in a supportive environment that encourages greater independence and overall well-being.
Employment & Education
Through transitional employment, local businesses hire Affinity House. Staff members learn the jobs and train interested members for the positions, which typically entail working 12 to 15 hours per week for six to nine months. If a member calls in sick, Affinity House staff is able to perform the work instead.
As members’ employment skills improve, so does their self-assurance. Transitional placements generally last from six to twelve months, at which point members may try another placement, return to school, or move on to Independent Employment.
Independent Employment
Independent Employment supports members who are ready to find and maintain their own jobs in the community while still benefiting from the encouragement and support of the Clubhouse. Members take the lead in securing employment, with staff available to help along the way. For both Transitional and Independent Employment, Affinity House staff assist members with building resumes, completing applications, and developing interview skills to help them succeed in the workplace.
Education Support
For members who want to continue their education, whether earning a GED, pursuing a college degree, or completing a certificate program, Affinity House offers guidance and encouragement along the way. Staff help members explore options, set goals, and help members take the first steps toward continuing their education.
A Day at the Clubhouse
A typical day at Affinity House is active, collaborative, and full of purpose. Members and staff work side by side to keep the Clubhouse running smoothly, taking part in a variety of tasks that support the community. From preparing the daily lunch and answering phones to assisting with clerical work like Medicaid billing and data entry, every contribution helps the Clubhouse thrive.
Each morning begins with a community meeting where members and staff review the day’s plans and identify what needs to be accomplished. Members then choose to work within different units, such as the clerical or kitchen teams, volunteering for tasks that match their interests and strengths. This shared work builds skills, strengthens friendships, and helps members grow in confidence while being part of a supportive St. Joseph County community.
Health and Wellness
At Affinity House, wellness is an important part of the Clubhouse community. Members have access to both psychiatric and primary healthcare services through Pivotal as we operate inside their facility. This partnership allows care to be coordinated in one supportive setting. Bringing these services together under one roof helps support the whole person and strengthens each member’s path toward improved health and well-being.
Wellness is also built into daily life at the Clubhouse. Members help plan and prepare healthy lunches, take part in walking groups and wellness activities, and gather for special events that celebrate the importance of nutritious food and healthy habits. Through these shared activities, members stay active, learn about wellness, and support one another in building healthier lifestyles.
Social Events & Advocacy
Social connection is an important part of life at Affinity House. Throughout the year, members and staff come together for special gatherings, celebrations, and community activities that help strengthen friendships and build a sense of belonging. These shared experiences create opportunities for members to relax, have fun, and stay connected with others in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Affinity House also encourages members to be voices for mental health awareness and advocacy. As part of the global Clubhouse community, members have opportunities to learn about issues affecting people living with mental illness, share their experiences, and help reduce stigma in the community. Through connection, education, and advocacy, members build confidence while helping create a more understanding and supportive community for all.
